ICT Subject Leaders' Conference June 2008

Back to ICT Subject Leaders' page

The theme for this year’s summer conference was ‘Podcasting’ and delegates enjoyed three lively and practical sessions from guest speakers who offered very different perspectives on this very exciting technology. Please scroll down the page to read summary from each session and to download various materials from the day.

We were very privileged to have Independent ICT consultant and Podcasting guru, Doug Dickinson lead the first session in which he introduced the conference to the concept of Podcasting via some very interesting video clips found on YouTube. Ask a Ninja and Podcasting in Plain English gave us all a really good understanding of the technology and showed two simple, effective but very different examples of how to explain technical concepts. Doug put Podcasting into an educational perspective and spoke about ‘authentic learning experiences’. Click here for more information about Podcasting in education.
Doug then went on to show us how to use an excellent piece of podcasting software produced by Softease called Podium. All delegates had a go at recording their voices, editing their recording and adding sound effects. We were also shown how to organise the recordings into chapters, fade the recordings in and out and add ‘layers’ of sound to create professional sounding productions. Finally, he showed us how the software makes it easy to publish and promote the finished podcast. Click here to watch the Podium demonstration videos and here to download help guides and information about Podium. Phillipa Lloyd-Perks from Softease was also there and offered Newham schools a 15% discount on orders received by the 31st July. Doug has written in his blog about the day, click here to read what he made of the event.

In session 2, I was joined by Primary Strategy consultant, Emma Parker, to lead the conference through a learning journey that we had undertaken in year 3 classes in Portway and Plaistow Primary schools. In this interactive case study, delegates were shown how sound recording and podcasting can be used to support and develop learning in Literacy by experiencing aspects of the lessons. This included listening different versions of the nonsense poem ‘On the Ning Nang Nong’ by Spike Milligan and recording their own version using a portable sound recorder. Delegates considered both the advantages and the barriers to using technology in this way were shown that ICT can play an exciting and very positive role in supporting children’s literacy.

Our last ‘guest’ speaker was Newham’s LGfL representative, Pippa Dorman who introduced the conference to the LGfL Podcast site which is a free service available to all London schools. She also demonstrated how to use Audacity which is a freely downloadable sound recorder and editor (please note, Audacity also needs the LAME encoder to create .mp3 files) showing us that podcasting can be done without investing in additional software. Pippa led the conference through a very enjoyable activity whereby delegates downloaded music from the excellent audio network site and added it to a voice recording. Some of the finished masterpieces can be heard here. Pippa has created a number of useful help guides which can be downloaded from here and you can find out more about the LGfL Podcast service by visiting the LGfL ‘Podcast Central’ area.

Doug took loads of photos on the day and can be viewed here. Thanks everyone who attended and contributed to the day. Please don’t hesitate to contact ITASS for help and advice on embedding podcasting and sound recording into the curriculum.
